They achieved this feat a couple of years ago under Pep Guardiola, winning the Premier League titles in 2018 and 2019.

But before we look at the upcoming season, here is a recap of Manchester City’s previous season in the Premier League!
The Champions of England in 2021/22
Manchester City returned to the Premier League after lifting the title in the 2020/21 season. In a challenging season overshadowed by COVID restrictions, many teams found it challenging to compete. However, Manchester City was ahead of the rest with its meticulous system. The players were consistently winning matches and adding points. At the end of the season, they comfortably won the title by 12 points.
Many people would have been doubtful about City’s chances of retaining the title after a long 2020/21 season. However, City fought against all odds to emerge victorious yet again.
The season began with a defeat for City at Spurs. But City quickly picked themselves up and put together scintillating performances. During the campaign, they broke multiple club records while playing with a high-tempo and creative brand of football. City was successful in establishing itself as an authority by comfortably winning matches. City was able to register comfortable wins scoring 5 goals or more against multiple teams. This includes games against Norwich, Arsenal, Leeds and Leicester City.
Over the course of the previous season, Manchester City had 93 points in 38 games. They were just one short of scoring a century of goals while conceding only 26.
In a breath-taking finale, City was two goals down against Aston Villa with less than 20 minutes left. City players stepped up to the mantle and scored two quick-fire goals to win the match. Manchester City was crowned the well-deserved Champions of the Premier League! The players were in great form. Their exceptional performances ensured that City would lift the title. Here are some of the players of the season:
Manchester City’s Players of the Season –
1) Kevin De Bruyne
One of the best footballers in the world, Kevin De Bruyne, was phenomenal throughout the previous season. He scored crucial goals while providing some important assists for the team. He scored 15 goals to record one of his best goal-scoring seasons. In addition, he also provided 8 assists.
De Bruyne’s best performance in the Premier League came against Watford. He was in blistering form, scoring four goals in the match. He was further instrumental in matches against tough teams. His right-footed bullet shot against Leicester City was one of the Goal of the Season contenders. He was also responsible for providing the crucial assist for Gundogan’s second goal against Aston Villa, which won City the Championship.
2) Joao Cancelo
The Portuguese wing-back is one of the most versatile players in the City lineup. He was deployed in both left and right back positions while also deputising in the mid-field. He was pivotal in City’s defence. Cancelo wasn’t just responsible for the solidity at the back; he also chipped in with crucial goals and assists during the season.
Cancelo has 7 assists with a pass completion rate of 85%. He was also responsible for helping City keep 21 clean sheets during the previous campaign.
3) Bernardo Silva
The mercurial midfielder from Portugal stepped up for the Cityzens with great style last season. He was in scintillating form during the winter period, which saw City go on a blistering winning streak. He scored 8 goals while recording 4 assists during the campaign. Silva contributed by scoring extremely crucial goals. This includes the winner against Leicester and close-range finishes against Liverpool and Manchester United.
Bernardo Silva represents the combination of industry and creativity. He has become an indispensable part of Manchester’s City team!
Now that we have relived the brilliant 2021/22 season, it’s time for us to preview the upcoming season –
Premier League Season Preview, 2022/23
Manchester City kick their campaign off with an away game against West Ham United. The hammers have been a difficult proposition for City, and this clash will be a test for the players. However, City will be looking to give themselves the ideal start with a win.
This fixture is followed by a home game against the newly promoted side, Bournemouth. On paper, this fixture looks straightforward. But it could prove to be a tricky match. After two seasons’ absence in the Premier League, Bournemouth will be looking to bounce back and make a winning statement. Although, the Cityzens are favourites to win this fixture.
Tough games for Manchester City
City’s first tough test comes at home against Tottenham on September 10th. Spurs had the edge over City in the previous season by winning both home and away matches. In fact, two of City’s three losses came against Spurs. Tottenham has also improved their squad by making important changes. They will be looking to contend for the title this season. But City players cannot be deterred. They need to win this fixture to establish a lead over other teams.
The game against Tottenham is followed by fixtures against Manchester United and Liverpool. Last season, City were successful in getting the better of their neighbours, Manchester United, with comfortable wins. However, United will be looking to improve their previous season’s performances. City need to be wary of any lapse of concentration and ensure they emerge victorious.
City versus Liverpool has become one of the most exciting fixtures of the season. The highly anticipated fixture involves some of the best players in England going head-to-head. Last season, the teams played out 2-2 draws in both fixtures. It won’t be surprising if this fixture is as pulsating as last season’s fixtures. City will turn towards their talismanic midfielder, Kevin De Bruyne, to step up and guide them to victory.
City ends its campaign with games against Chelsea and Brentford. Chelsea had won against City in the Champions League final. But City has managed to beat them twice since then. However, with the fixture scheduled right before the season finale, a victory would be crucial in City’s title defence.
