Manchester City has had a successful start to their 2021 campaign. In the 2020/21 Premier League season, they were crowned the champions for the 5th time. They were also victorious in domestic cup competitions, lifting the English League Cup for the fourth consecutive time. In 2021, they have already scored 112 Premier League goals, the most since the competition began in 1992, and also reached the Champions League final for their best finish in the competition to-date. Manchester City lift the Premier League title in the 2020/21 season
Manchester City has had a blockbuster season in the 2020/21 campaign. City was coming off a great run of games during winter, breaking multiple club records. They began the calendar year in great style as they remained undefeated in January 2021. They registered victories in 21 consecutive games during their undefeated streak, breaking the record for the most consecutive wins in the top-flight.
Manchester City players were in scintillating form as they comfortably cruised through a challenging fixture list. Kevin De Bruyne won the PFA Player of the Year award, while rising star Phil Foden won PFA Young Player of the Year. Ruben Dias picked up the Premier League Player of the Year and FWA Player of the Season awards for his solid performances at the heart of the City’s defence.
Winning moments from the 2020/2021 season
The 2020/21 season was a display of character and fortitude for Manchester City players. With uncertain playing conditions during the pandemic and injuries to important players, Manchester City was enduring a tough start. But once they found their rhythm, they were unstoppable. During the campaign, there were some brilliant performances from the Manchester City players. Here are some of the best games from the 2020/21 season.
Manchester City outshine rivals with comfortable victories
Manchester City v/s Chelsea: 3-1
One of the most important matches came right at the start of the year with City going head-to-head with a strong Chelsea side. The match started with both teams playing defensive. But City switched gears scoring two quick-fire goals. The first goal was a quick shot from Ilkay Gundogan that found the bottom corner of the net. The second goal came from Phil Foden, who calmly tucked in a low cross.
Manchester City further added a third goal before half-time, with Captain Kevin De Bruyne getting himself on the scores sheet. Chelsea responded with a stoppage-time goal, but it was too late as City had already stamped their authority in the game. Overall, it was a comfortable win for City as they started the year with the PL title in their sights.
Manchester City v/s Liverpool: 4-1
Perhaps, one of the most impressive victories came in one of the most anticipated clashes of the year. City took on Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, who were having a tough season, but were finding their momentum for a strong finish. The stage was set for an exciting encounter!
The tactical battle was contested with both teams maintaining clean sheets going into half-time. City quickly took charge in the second half, scoring through star mid-fielder Ilkay Gundogan, who was in top form during the campaign. Liverpool then responded with a penalty from Mohammed Salah to equalise.
But Manchester City players weren’t going to hold back, as they took the lead again with a smart finish from Gundogan. City quickly added a third from Raheem Sterling, whose header gave City a two-goal cushion. They put the game beyond Liverpool’s reach as they scored the fourth goal through Phil Foden, who found the back of the net with an emphatic finish. It was a game that truly cemented City’s dominance in the season.
Manchester City v/s Everton: 5-0
Manchester City had already sealed the title, but they produced one of their finest performances on the last day of the season. They added another five goals to their tally against Everton. City was in control from the kick-off, as they took the lead with Kevin De Bruyne, who shot from outside the box to find the bottom corner. The second goal didn’t take long as a driving run from Gabriel Jesus doubled the lead for the home side.
However, Everton was awarded a penalty after Richarlison was fouled, but Ederson made the save to maintain a clean sheet. Foden then scored a well-constructed team goal. This was before Aguero came on as a substitute and added two more goals in his last Premier League game for a fairy-tale ending to an illustrious career at City.
Manchester City enjoyed a great season, lifting the title for the third time in the last four years. Overall, City was majestic in its campaign, comfortably sealing the title with 12 points over their neighbours, Manchester United.
Manchester City reach the Champions League final
It was one of the most successful years for Manchester City in the Champions League, as they reached the finals of the competition for the first time. They were unbeaten during the group stages, winning five out of six games and scoring 13 goals in the process.
Manchester City was relentless in the Round of 16 and the quarter-finals, beating German teams, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Borussia Dortmund.
The semi-finals was the farthest they had gotten in the competition. The task ahead wasn’t easy as they were about to face one of the tournament favourites in Paris Saint Germain (PSG). But City completely took charge of the tie, winning the first leg 2-1 with a second-half winner from Riyadh Mahrez.
They were more comfortable in the second leg as they cruised past the Parisians with a scoreline of 2-0. Mahrez was on hand again, scoring an excellent brace to make the aggregate scoreline 4-1 in City’s favour.
City had made it to the finals for the first time. It was a huge milestone, and they were just one step away from winning the competition. They were set to play Chelsea, whom they had beaten comfortably earlier in the league. However, City missed out by a narrow 1-0 loss in a game which saw Manchester City players give their all in a show of true grit and determination.
The Champions League final appearance capped a great season. Manchester City bagged a domestic double as they geared up for the 2021/2022 season.
Manchester City make a blistering start to the 2021/22 campaign
The 2021/22 campaign is halfway through, and Manchester City has made a strong start as they continue to fight for top honours. They started their campaign with a tough loss against Tottenham Hotspur. But since then, they have been in great form, brushing past opponents with breathtaking performances.
Some of City’s best performances include back-to-back 5-0 wins against Norwich City and Arsenal. The game against Norwich City marked City’s brilliant comeback from the first game as they scored five amazing goals. The goals came from Aymeric Laporte, Raheem Sterling, Riyadh Mahrez and star signing Jack Grealish.
Manchester City players were truly in top form, with new signing Jack Grealish registering his first goal for the club. He has been instrumental for Manchester City by helping them score crucial goals and providing important assists. He was one of the star players in the game against Norwich City.
Manchester City v/s Arsenal: 5-0
City was relentless with yet another 5-0 win against Arsenal. Gundogan put the home side ahead with a well-timed header. The lead quickly doubled as Ferran Torres tucked in a close-range finish, before Jesus made it 3-0 from a cross from Grealish.
They went in at 3-0 at Half-time, but Manchester City did not stop there. They started the second-half with the same intensity, as Rodri made it 4-0 with a sublime shot. Ferran Torres was back on the score sheet to complete the scoreline. This was one of City’s most dominating performances, as they made a roaring start to their campaign.
Manchester City v/s Leeds United: 7-0
Manchester City’s best performance came against Leeds in mid-December. City absolutely bossed the game with some of the best football the players have played under Pep Guardiola. City was quick to open the scoring with Phil Foden, who guided the ball past the Leeds United goalkeeper for the first goal. Jack Grealish added to the score sheet with a strong header to double the lead.
Captain Kevin De Bruyne latched onto a through ball from Rodri to produce an excellent finish. The scoreline was 3-0 with just over 30 minutes on the clock. But City wasn’t done, as they continued scoring with Riyadh Mahrez, who cut onto his favourite left foot in the 49th minute to score in consecutive games. Kevin De Bruyne was back again on the score sheet, but this time with one of the goals of the season, as he unleashed an unstoppable shot from outside Leeds United’s penalty box!
Manchester City defenders got into the act with John Stones and Nathan Ake scoring the sixth and the seventh goal. Overall, it was one of the best performances from City in this calendar year.
