If you missed Manchester City’s start to the 2020-21 season, then we bring you the scoop. Man City is a side that nobody can discount in the race for the Premier League. In the past decade, they have managed to win 4 Premier League titles and despite not winning the EPL last year, their stalwarts have arrived after a pretty successful last season. This season, however, has been exciting and thrilling, to say the least. With 4 titles up for grabs, manager Pep Guardiola has had a few busy weeks and the players are still settling in for what is going to a tight race for the top spot. QNET reviews Manchester City’s performances in October and what we can expect in the coming weeks from the blue half of Manchester.
English Premier League
After an opening day 3-1 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers, the Citizens crashed to a 2-5 defeat at home to Leicester City. However, things have very much improved from there and City got back on its feet by drawing 1-1 against newly promoted side Leeds United. This was a great result considering the form Leeds have been in. The following week, Pep Guardiola’s side got back to winning ways with a hard-fought 1-0 win against familiar foes Arsenal. This win was a big won for Man City and was also their first clean sheet of the season. A week later, Man City were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw away at West Ham but they managed to maintain their unbeaten streak in October. The last matchday in October was a tricky fixture against Sheffield United and City grabbed 3 big points and they must be happy to be back on track. It is fair to say that Manchester City has had a slow start to their Premier League season but now with 11 points on the board and with a game in hand, another win will put them in the Top 4 comfortably. City fans can expect November to be an exciting month because things are just getting started for the Men in Sky Blue.
Champions League
While the Sky Blues might have had a sluggish start in the EPL, their exploits in Europe have been thrilling. City comprehensively beat FC Porto at home in their first Champions League clash of the season. The victory was sweet especially because new signings made an instant impact with Ferran Torres netting on his CL debut for the club. The following week, in the second Champions League game, Man City faced a threatening Marseille side at their home turf and came back victorious. Torres opened the scoring, making it 2 goals in 2 games for him. Sterling and Gundogan got in on the act, making it a comfortable 3-0 win for Guardiola’s men. The 3rd round of the CL matchup saw City enjoy a 3-0 win again at home against Olympiacos. Ferran Torres, continuing his rich vein of form, scored in his third Champions League game in a row. The match also marked the comeback of Gabriel Jesus with a goal before Cancelo capped off a neat goal during injury time. This means that City are sitting atop their group table with 9 points in the group stage. One more win will ensure Man City’s qualification to the knockout stages.
Their EFL Cup matches have both been easy wins against Burnley and Bournemouth. And Manchester City FC is going all guns blazing on securing their EFL Cup yet again. The three-time defending champions have drawn Arsenal away from home for their Quarter Final clash in December for their EFL campaign before the FA Cup matches start in January of 2021.
