Season 2 of the Formula 4 Indian Championship, was a special occasion for Chetan Korada – Chennai’s own para-athlete. The 37-year-old veteran with over 18 years of racing under his belt, finally made his Formula 4 Indian Championship debut in his hometown.
Representing Chennai Turbo Riders on Chennai’s first-ever street circuit, Chetan made history by becoming the only specially-abled driver to compete in a non-modified car. The feel and feedback from his carbon-fibre prosthetic limbs allow Chetan to feel at one with his car. The springs and hydraulics of latest tech modifications never caught his fancy because they take that feeling away.
His determination to compete on an equal footing is truly admirable. He refuses to use modified cars or special accommodations, believing in the importance of fair competition. “I wanted a level playing field,” he explains. “I believe in challenging myself, not making things easier.”
Dare to Dream
Despite losing both legs as a child due to a bone deformity, he never stopped dreaming. He kept trying his hand at different sports before he eventually stepped into the cockpit of a racing car and fell in love with racing. He feels most himself when racing – the track is his home away from home.
Since he got behind the wheel and drove his first race in 2007, Chetan has enjoyed a decorated career with many podium finishes. “The moment I sat into the car for the first time, I felt more comfortable. The people around me were really encouraging and that support was my fuel.”, says Chetan.
Chetan credits a lot of his success to FMSCI president, Akbar Ebrahim, who showed him the ropes. Former F2 racer and Akbar’s son, Armaan Ebrahim, would later take him under his wing, encouraging him to compete in various series like the JK Racing Asia Series and putting him through a scholarship programme to make the next step in his career.
