Manchester City players celebrate becoming the Premier League Champions at the Etihad Stadium

The last season was one of the most successful seasons for the citizens. They were the firm favourites even before the mid-way point of the campaign.

The season began with uncertainties. Covid restrictions meant that teams were to play football behind closed doors with no fans. With irregular playing conditions, many clubs endured challenges during this period.

Manchester City was one of those clubs experiencing a tough run of games during the start of the campaign. But, City rose back with a fighting spirit and went on a roll to win 21 consecutive games during the winter period, breaking the record for the most number of consecutive wins in the top-flight. While most teams continued to struggle, City continued marching on towards the premier league trophy. Their remarkable winning streak also saw them register the most number of consecutive wins at the start of the calendar.

The result was a sensational campaign, with Manchester City lifting the title for the third time in the last four years. A remarkable feat considering the tough playing circumstances during the pandemic.

Now, it’s a new season. The fans are back in the stadium, and the Citizens are ready for the Premier League action. But can City win the premier league again?

For all the City fans and football enthusiasts, here is the Premier League season preview, and QNET is supporting Manchester City for winning the title!

Manchester City players have hit the ground running with comfortable pre-season victories against Preston, Barnsley and Blackpool. However, their most notable challenge awaits them in the Community Shield.

Leicester City narrowly missed out on the top four spots in the previous season. But they were victorious in the FA cup. However, Manchester City is poised and ready for the challenge, as they look to start the season strong with a Community Shield trophy.

The Premier League campaign for Manchester City kick-starts on August 15th against formidable rivals Tottenham Hotspur, before home fixtures against Norwich and Arsenal.

Tottenham and Arsenal present tough propositions, but the most notable challenge is the back-to-back games against last year’s Champions League opponents Chelsea and title rivals Liverpool. Manchester City plays Chelsea on September 25th. This game is followed by a Merseyside game against recent title challengers Liverpool, who’ll be looking to bounce right back after a tough 2020/2021 season.

Another exciting fixture comes against city neighbours, Manchester United, on November 6th. The last few meeting have been tough for the Citizens. However, they will be looking to beat them in the upcoming fixtures.

Tough fixtures in the Premier League

The winter period follows this short run of games. It is always a tough time for most teams to cope with back-to-back fixtures and short recovery time. But if City can replicate the previous season’s run during this period, there is no denying that they will be the favourites to win the premier league title again.

While the premier league presents a mixed bag of fixtures, the most notable challenge comes towards the end of February with games against Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton. These fixtures can prove to be pivotal in Manchester City’s title charge.

Towards the end of the campaign, games against West Ham United and Aston Villa are a couple of tough fixtures. Both clubs have been establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with in recent times. These games will not be easy for City. However, there is no denying that with City’s motivation and team spirit, they can win these games.

Manchester City start are the favourites to defend the premier league title and win consecutive titles in two years. But can they do it without Sergio Aguero?

Can Manchester City win the Premier League without Sergio Aguero?

Sergio Aguero has been one of the most valuable players for Manchester City in the past decade. He has been leading City’s charge every year. Aguero is City’s all-time leading goal scorer with over 200 goals for the club.

But, with his recent move to Barcelona, he passes the baton on to younger players such as Phil Foden, Gabriel Jesus and Ferran Torres. As Aguero moves on, there is no denying that young players are stepping up to the mantle, with Foden and Torres regularly contributing for City with goals and assists throughout the previous campaign.

Players to watch out for during the Premier League campaign

Kevin De Bruyne

It is no surprise that the Premier League Player of the Year 2021, Kevin De Bruyne, is on the top of this list. He was in top form throughout the previous campaign, leading Manchester City’s title charge by example. The Belgium maestro racked up twelve assists and six goals, averaging 0.72 goal contributions per game.

Kevin De Bruyne’s most notable performance came in the 3-1 victory over Chelsea in January, where he scored and assisted to give City the advantage. Manchester City will once again depend on their talisman to lead them during the campaign.

Raheem Sterling

After enduring a relatively tough campaign, the Euro 2020 finalist Raheem Sterling was on a song for his country. He was a crucial player in England’s road to the finals as he has been for City, scoring important last-minute goals and helping City win during tough fixtures.

Sterling will be key to City’s title campaign this season. The Citizens will be looking forward to his scintillating strides from the left-wing.

Phil Foden

From a promising youngster to a game-winning midfielder, Phil Foden has been the club’s rising star. The Young Player of the Season has been in sensational form, scoring important goals for the citizens.

Foden’s most prolific performances came towards the end of the campaign, where he was virtually contributing with a goal or an assist in every game. The run included important goals against Brighton, Everton and a crucial game-winning goal against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

Phil Foden was tasked with filling the big shoes of David Silva, and he has certainly done that exceptionally well. This season, in turn, can be the biggest yet. The stage is set for Foden to shine again with his mesmerising skills.
